IML Bans Bareback Companies, Ignores Reality

NEW YORK – Got a nice letter from the folks at IML today, saying that companies who promote barebacking will not be allowed to participate in future IML events.   They site that the CDC has informed them that HIV Infections are still on the rise, and that they feel it is the obligation to do everything that they can to help the community.

I’m gonna keep this response short and focused:

1.  New HIV Infections are not on the rise throughout the whole gay community.  In a little reported fact, new HIV infections among men who have sex with men, are down *again* in New York City and San Francisco.  Here is a table from the Department of Public Health in SF.  The highlights:

2002
426 new cases

2003
533 new cases

2004
590 new cases

2005
454 new cases

2006
396 new cases

And here are a doozy of some quotes (from the CDC!) that you have probably never seen before:

Since the peak level of new infections in the mid-1980s, just prior to the introduction of HIV testing, the transmission rate has declined by approximately 89 percent (from 44 transmissions per 100 persons living with HIV in 1984 to five transmissions per 100 persons living with HIV in 2006).

Over the last decade, as prevention efforts have been expanded and improved treatments for HIV became available, the transmission rate has declined by 33 percent (from an estimated eight transmissions per 100 persons living with HIV in 1997 to five in 2006).

Five transmissions per 100 persons living with HIV in 2006 means more than 95 percent of persons living with HIV did not transmit the infection that year.

This is from a report titled “Dramatic Declines Indicate Success in U.S. HIV Prevention.” that is available here:

http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/topics/surveillance/resources/factsheets/transmission.htm

So in the history of HIV there is a lot of bad news, why we don’t talk about the good news when we get it is baffling. We need to know what works not just what sucks, and we need to stop being so married to the narrative that the sky is falling, which while it serves to keep people’s fear of HIV alive, it does very little to help stop the problem.

The fact of the matter is that if you are HIV negative and want to stay that way, you are not going to go to a sex party sponsored by Treasure Island Media and sit with your ass in air and a bottle of poppers.  You’re far more likely to get infected by trusting that guy on manhunt who has negative in his status and swears that he was tested two weeks ago.  Now there are not going to be any more parties sponsored by TIM and all those guys are gonna be on manhunt, so please don’t be an idiot.

2. Disincentivizing companies that produce both bareback and condom from producing condom movies is stupid.  If your problem is bareback porn, then why not allow condom porn and give producers and incentive to keep making it?  Why ban entire companies, those like DAM, Wurstfilm, and Jalif Studios — whom we represent — who also sell condom films?  Don’t you think you would want to give them an incentive to keep making these movies?

3.   IML is one long PNP session for many, and for some the only reason that they even go to IML is to sit in that host hotel doing Meth and looking for loads on manhunt, a fact that won’t change with IMLs new policy.  I’ve been 5 years to this event, and I can tell you there is nothing — nothing — besides giving away free condoms that address this fact.

It’s complete idiocy to think that the absence of bareback porn companies will effect peoples behavior at this event.  In fact, in the time in which we have seen the largest increase in production of bareback porn, we have also seen “dramatic success” of HIV prevention programs. So the idea that there is some causative link between bareback porn and increasing infections is an emotional response that is not supported by actual surveillance data.

4. Censorship of bareback porn is not prevention of HIV infection.  Ignoring the fact that no one ever got HIV from masturbating to a DVD, if you took all the bareback porn off of the shelves tomorrow, people would still have bareback sex.  Conversely, if people were effectively educated about making decisions, they all regularly tested for their status, and if proven effective methods of Harm Reduction, like sero-sorting, were encouraged instead of moral aggrandizing, you could pump 24/7 bareback porn into everyone’s room at IML and there would be no new HIV infections at the event.

That’s all, I’m a bit frustrated today that the conversation about this issue in our industry continues to be dominated by people who’s goal seems to be to keep fear of HIV alive, and scapegoat pornographers without wanting to talk about what is actually working to address the problem of new infections.  If you actually give a shit about HIV/AIDS you’ll be informed and responsive to the actual reality.

This is 2009, not 1989, evolve your message.

I suggets you look at that, as there was a dramatic jump in one year in new HIV cases. I am not picking a fight, I just dont like seeing misinformation

which chart are you looking at? There are 5 or 6 on that page.

Is that number specific to gay men or is it looking at the US population as a whole?

BarebackRT.com was saddened to receive an email from the coordinators of IML as well. The email basically states that we are no longer welcome to attend future IML events because we allow our members to make a conscious adult decision to do what they wish in the privacy of their own bedroom. It appears to us that the coordinators of IML feel that consenting adults that choose to bareback are no longer welcome to attend future events as well.

BarebackRT.com feels that IML’s decision to not allow any company that deals with bareback content to exhibit at future IML events is draconian. During IML 2009, we had over 9,000 of our members move their profiles to Chicago, or post travel ads in Chicago. Our concurrent online members tripled during the entire weekend of IML. It is probably a safe assumption that these numbers represented a hefty chunk of the IML attendees this year. We feel that IML should think twice before they alienate such a large number of their attendees by telling them what is acceptable to do or view in the privacy of their bedroom. We see no difference between IML’s announcement and the U.S. Government saying gays must pay taxes but can’t marry or enjoy any of the rights associated with marriage. We feel that it is not any of IML’s business what people do in the privacy of their own home, what LEGAL material they wish to view or to pass moral judgement on what activities they wish to partake in. If IML does not repeal this decision BarebackRT.com will consider sending an email to our entire membership asking them to strongly consider not attending the 2010 IML event. We feel that people would be better served by education about the risks associated with barebacking than being told they are not welcome at an event. IML is in a unique position to be a force for good in the gay community, but the decision to ban legal activity that they do not agree with makes them seem like the gay community’s moral police, instead. If anything IML should address the rampant and blatant illegal drug use witnessed at IML 2009, to which they seemed to have turned a blind eye.

I suspect that there are major factors behind the IML decision that have nothing to do with HIV transmission. Economic pressure is probably foremost….from the Hotel(s) and/or other sponsors. And possibly political pressure from public authorities that fear some IML related activities have gotten too much public notice. Remember what happened in New Orleans 5 years ago, when the “people of faith” got into the bars and started taking pictures; at MAL this year regarding one of the events which was “discovered” and publicized by the right wing; and at what is happening in NYC right now with arrests of innocent gay men in porn stores under the false label of “prostitution”, and the closing of public sex venues that have operated with full awareness of the authorities for years. Why the sudden urgency about protecting gay men’s health now that we didn’t see 10 years ago? Just look behind the talk about health issues, at the political and social and economic climate, and you’ll find the more likely answers. And don’t forget to look at our fellow gay men and rights organizations who find some of us an embarrassment and are willing to ignore (or join in) repression of individual rights in the name of acceptance by the straight world.

I know I’m in the minority here, but IML has made a smart decision. AIDS has gotten out of control and the gay population must accept some responsibility. We can talk about freedom and rights, but this is a public health issue that, sadly, has been transformed into a civil rights here. Let’s take control of our dicks and start thinking with the other head.

Okay, um, not allowing bareback companies to attend events is not going to stop men all over the world from barebacking. In that case they would have stopped years ago. Men and woman have a choice and grown enough to make there own decision what they want to do in bed. It’s almost like saying pregnant woman aren’t allowed back in school cause it will cause other girls to get pregnant. Young girls stick choose to have babies when they feel like it. So this whole not allow to our events is dumb and stupid and is not going to stop men all over the world from barebacking.

wethere are poz guys who equally disassociate by attempting to sero-sort by only playing w/other poz guys. This often stems from being feared, stigmatized, rejected, etc. I would also argue this is probably where the incorrect but prevailing perception that the poz community ‘glamorizes being poz’ comes from. Pick any poz guy you know and ask him how glamorous he thinks being HIV-positive is. I think you’ll find the major part of them do not see it that way. From my own point of view, I find most poz guys are open and honest about their status and act responsibly. Others are less forthcoming but still act responsibly by practicing safe sex w/their sexual partners. Both approaches in my mind are acceptable forms of behavior, one being better than the other.
Me personally, I’d prefer to have sex with an honest openly guy who admits his status over a guy who had no idea. And yes, there are a few who know and take no responsibility at all and leave it up to their partners to force the issue or not.
